Botanical Art started in the 1700s when English sailing ships explored the world and needed a way to record the exotic flora and fauna they encountered. The naturalist on board collected samples and drew scientific illustrations of plants as realistically as possible. Botanical illustration faded away after the invention of photography. Today it's enjoying a resurgence as an art form in the San Francisco Bay Area.
